2006 TOWNSEND CUP

This was my 11th year participating in this fantastic event that gets better each year.

I played Phil in the scramble 1/1 but we were both able to play two shots. This helped me on one shot to have the I club length positioning of the ball for the second shot as my previous shot was behind the tree. Won this match. The Scotch twosome match played with Ed Millett against Ron Culp and Kern Cavanaugh. We lost the first hole, tied the second hole when I couldn't make 2,6 ft putts. We won thee 4th hole with a par and didn't make any gain on our only handicap stroke 5th hole. Ed missed his second shot and only moved the ball about 6 inches after a mighty swing but lost the hole when I couldn't convert on about an 8 ft putt. Number 6 Ed hit he ball into the sand trap in the front right of the green but sunk the putt for a par after I hit out of the trap.

The 7th hole was halved with bogies when I hit my drive into the furrows beside the fairway, Ed moved the ball 10 ft and I hit a tree with the ball on the next shot. Now the ball was 150 yards from the pin and we were laying 3. Ed knocked it on the green and Iounk a right to left breaking putt from 30 feet. We won the 8th hole with a double bogie when both drivers put their tee shots into the lake. Ed's drive on No 9 was a "Thing of beauty" down the middle and about a foot longer than Ron Culp's (his leap after was about 4fbet. Kern hit the second shot onto the middle of the green about 12 feet from the hole. I hit our second shot into the bunker left of the green and Ed hit a putter out of the bunker with a high slope to within 20 feet of the hole and I sunk another right to left putt. Ron's putt stopped within 1foot of the hole and the putt was conceded to half the hole and the match for a tie.

In the Thursday singles match I was opposed by Hal Wilson who had a difficult tournament with shanking a number of shots. He worked hard on his swing all week and nearly came out of it but I had my best game of the week and won with a net 67. Our Orange team won the Townsend Cup. Must have been the University of Texas color that did it.

We were saddened by Tim Marcovich back problems with the surgeon not being able to operate under present circumstances. His Texas Hold Em Tournament was held is a spastic manner but we did it. We purchased 420 chips and 4 decks of cards and distributed $1000 in chips to each player for a $25 buy in. The dealers were Ron Culp, Mike Smiley, Mike Anderson, Hal Wilson etc. This years winners were Mike Grieve, Rick Boer who divided up $400, and Brad Welsh finished third.

The Matches at Mission Royale were really fun this year with the Calcutta auction raising $2485. Phil's syndicate raised $1000 and purchased 12 of 17 teams and won 1st and 2nd place for a payout to each member of $120 on their $100 investment. Mike Anderson became the MFWA (Whining Auctioneer). He did an outstanding job in conducting the auction and pushing up the bids.

Fines: Ed Millett got two fines for having too much fan. Phil Millett got a fine for fining Ed twice for the same infraction. I got a fine far f9ling to kick be an be Earth Mover driver that ran over my ball at Mission Royale.

The highest scoring 4 players and ties had to play from the green tees and I won that distinction on the second day of play after shooting a net 85. Since I didn't bring shorts to the tournament (in error) I wore the skirt in the proper manner and found felt as good as shots on a hot day. I wore it again on the next two hot days when it got hot in the afternoon. I got lots of comments, cat calls etc. but I was comfortable and enjoyed the experience. I asked Frank if the skirt made my ass look big and he said it was my skinny legs that did it.

Francisco Grande had a contract service that provided massages this year and several of us purchased them. They were done well.

Tom Whitehead took many photographs of the tournament and he was appointed the MFPT (Picture Taker). He didn't want Professional Photographer because of the acronym of MFPP.

We had three generations of Smileys playing this year. Four NFG's this year.
