This year the course at Casa Grande was in the best condition I have seen in the 10 years I have been participating in the event. The weather had some tricks for us this year with strong winds on Saturday limiting our play to 9 holes because of cold and dust storms. Wednesday through Friday also presented us with strong winds which made play more difficult. Thursday's round was particularly difficult for me around the greens. I was playing with Phil Millett in a twosome and my 107 won me part ownership of the shit hat. "Thank you", Danny Wallace for being the co winner and for demanding to wear the hat. I was happy to see Jerry Heller returning after several years, many of my good memories returned with him.
We had five NFG's this year and Danny Wallace ("You sure are looking good") was very popular. All were good guys and fit well into the group.
Monday I had the pleasure of playing again with Jim Chambers. Several years ago I was hitting longer tee shots than Jim and he said "I can't believe a 50 year old guy is out driving me". Of course at that time I was 63. It isn't even a contest now as he seems to be getting more distance with age. He had a new Titleist Driver and he let me use it on my drives with good results.
Tuesday, my roommate Roger Anderson and I couldn't get anything going to even come close to matching the Net 48 that we established as the benchmark of excellence in 1996 for the two man best ball tournament.
The Tuesday night Texas Hold Em tournament was won by Hal Wilson. I am thankful of Tim Marcovich for bring this to the Townsend Cup as it has made the growth of this popular game more interesting to all of us. We all started with 1000 dollars in play money chips and I lost mine in three hands when I went all in and lost. I bought 1000 more and went all in again and in several hands I was up to about 13000 in chips. I won one hand with a king turned up on the river. After making it to the last table, I lost most of my stash to Hal when we both had flushes but his was higher than mine.
The Calcutta at Mission Royale was difficult for both Jack Bean and me because of the high winds and because we couldn't get anything working. (We both sucked.) Playing in the same foursome was Kern Cavanaugh and Mike Greve and both played good golf within themselves and cashed out well in the tournament. The course was in good shape but the winds were strong and you couldn't get away from them as there are no trees or other protection. The cart girl was a joke (Not the sharpest box in the Crayon).
My Townsend Cup singles match was against Don Hagen on Friday and he shot a 92 to defeat me. His lowest round of the week prior to this match against me was 93 which won him low gross in his flight in addition to winning the medal play tournament for the week. I was happy to see Don playing so well since he had surgery on his knee in November. I guess I don't mind losing to a good guy when I play well but just get beaten.
